new bamboo shoots

Post autor: needmore » 07 kwie 2007 07:31

Hello, does anyone see new spring shoots yet in Eastern Europe? I had seen 10-12 species shooting including some Phyllostachys as our weather was very warm. Now it has been very unusually cold and these early shoots will likely abort. Most of the damage will not be too bad as many shoots were just popping up and they will be fine but the Praecox will suffer as it had many taller shoots, the Spectabilis had 20 or more 2cm - 2.5 cm diameter shoots, and the Moso has a shoot that was more than 5 cm but it will likely die now.

Here are some pictures, but I'm not sure they can post here:

Yes, in my site, Kraków, Poland - Ph. aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' shoots are now 1'' tall.
I noticed today one 3-4'' long horizontal shoot sent by Ph. rubicunda as well. It is all as yet.
Because our weather conditions are typical for early spring and stable
- about 0C at night, several more during the day (and it is slowly getting warmer),
I rather don't notice any unusual growth of new shoots, they are secure waiting for warmth.

The temperature here was 25C - 29C for 3 weeks, 28C on Monday and then -5C 3 days later. Very confusing for young bamboo!

For me bamboo shooting season is almost over, the early shoots are leafing out and the last of the Phyllostachys have already been shooting. How are the shoots in Poland at this time? If anyone has older plantings of propinqua & propinqua beijing, I would like to see photos of the shoots, I do not believe that my plants by this name are correct, my beijing looks much like flexuosa.

Finished shooting? You are about one month ahead of us. :)
In Kraków the last three - Shanghai3, parvifolia, atrovaginata - just started to send their shoots, couple of inches now.
The first - aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' - has reached about 2/3 of maximum, shoots not branched as yet.
I don't have propinqua and even thouhg there's no big problem to get one, there's worse problem,
I don't have space for it in my garden! :(
