Bamboo gardens in Great Britain

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carwinion
Location: Mawnan Smith, nr Falmouth, Cornwall. Take the road to the left of the Red Lion. The entrance to the garden is a few hundred yards up the lane, to the right.
Open: All year, daylight hours. Admission £2. It is possible to stay at Carwinion (B&B), and cream teas are served in the afternoon. Enquiries to Anthony Rogers (tel: 01326 250258 ).
Garden: a typical Cornish valley garden, leading down to the Helford River. Biggest Gunnera in the British Isles. Notable specimen of Drepanostachyum hookerianum. A magnificent clump of D. falconeri has flowered totally this year (1996), and though dead, is currently a spectacular sight. Qiongzhuea tumidinoda showing promise. Good stands of Phyllostachys henonis, P. violescens and Chusquea breviglumis around pond.

Pitt White
Location: Uplyme, nr Lyme Regis, Dorset. Difficult to find.
Open: by arrangement with Jonathan Gear, who runs the guesthouse, where it is possible to stay. Tel: (01297) 442094 .
Garden: laid out in the 1950's and 60's by Dr Nathan Mutch and his gardener Alexander Lawson, who wrote his well-known book on the basis of his experience there. Though somewhat overgrown and depleted in recent years, the bamboo collection is still well worth seeing.

Garden: the Bamboo Garden was laid out in the 1890's on a sheltered side near the Thames, and has recently been tidied up and considerably enlarged.
